Transferrin is a glycoprotein. Alcohol inhibits the glycosylation of several glycoproteins, including transferrin. Chronic alcoholism leads to transferrin deficient in four to five sialic acid residues.
Consumption of more than 60 g of alcohol/day leads to an increase in the plasma carbohydrate-deficient transferrin
concentration.
Other marker of alcoholic liver disease: γ-glutamyl transpeptidase.
